New Zealand’s Marlborough Sounds are quite literally ‘drowned’ river valleys (rias) – beautiful coastal inlets that covering some 4,000 km² of sounds, islands, and peninsulas at the South Island’s north-easternmost point. Surrounded by an eco-marine haven where unique birdlife abounds the waters of the Queen Charlotte Sound, where the Bay of Many Coves is based, are calm and ideal for sailing, but if you’d rather voyeur than voyage, relax in the native bush environment right by the water’s edge, and soak up this incredible, pristine natural environment.

Bay of Many Coves is a small resort (with just 11 apartments) that offers a back-to-nature fantasy deep in the magical Marlborough Sounds. Set in a secluded spot, overlooking the water in Queen Charlotte Sound, Bay of Many Coves is a magnificent wilderness resort only accessible by boat or helicopter. Surrounded by picturesque bays and coves bordered by forest, the Lodge provides stylishly furnished apartments (each with their own private balcony) nestled into the hillside with beautiful bay views.

With no road access (it’s only accessible by boat, water plane or helicopter) Bay of Many Coves is as unique as it is serene.

A Back-to-Nature Romantic Getaway

There are a number of dining options for guests at the resort including:

– The Bight Café- right on the water’s edge. It’s relaxed atmosphere attract guests and boaties alike, to enjoy all-day dining and good coffee.
– The Foredeck Restaurant- open every evening, the Foredesk provides excellent fine-dining and degustation dinner options and an international wine-list.

About the area


The Marlborough Sounds is an area at the top of New Zealand’s South Island. It features an intricate series of native bush-clad bays and coves sheltered from the open sea, leaving its waters calm and ideal for sailing.

Bay of Many Coves Resort lies just 30 minutes north of the seaside town of Picton, the access port to all inter-island ferry services from Wellington. Two companies offer daily ferry services between Wellington and Picton, linking New Zealand’s North and South Islands. The scenic cruise across Cook Strait takes approximately 3 hours; vessels carry both passengers and vehicles.

There are no roads in or out of the resort, but regular boat services (water-taxis) run from Picton to the resort throughout the day. You can also access the resort by helicopter or by floatplane (from Picton or Wellington).
